When it comes to gaming your personal computer is where it really begins. The most average of person can be considered a PC gamer simply by playing a game of solitaire or mine sweeper on their computer.
On the PC you will find the most hardcore of gamers that spend a majority of their life in a virtual world. For example, the game World of Warcraft has more than 10.9 million players as of this year. These people spend hundreds of dollars, real money, and countless hours, to maintain characters, accounts and items in game. These are the hardcore gamers.
"With more than 10.9 million monthly subscribers,World of Warcraft is currently the world's largest MMORPG in those terms, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG," as documented on Wikipedia's website.
